Egypt: Morsi is under arrest

Deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is being detained by the country's army amid suggestions he could face charges. Celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir square greeted news of the elected Islamist leader's forced exit, who also prompted clashes across the country, leaving 14 killed. Speaking after the head of the military announced fresh presidential and parliamentary elections, a senior army official said Mr Morsi "is being held preventively for final preparations". According to senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mr Morsi was being detained at the defense ministry after he and his presidential team were initially held in the Presidential Republican Guards Club. Both the head chief of the Muslim Brotherhood have also been arrested, with warrants issued for the arrest of 300 party members, according to reports.
