At least 80 killed in Pakistan and Afghanistan monsoon floods

Eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan have been hit by torrential rain, causing floods which have claimed the lives of at least 80 people. The floods have, in addition to the deaths, caused extensive damage to properties in both countries. Officials in the Sarobi district of Afghanistan's Kabul province said 34 people had died there alone, and Pakistan's biggest city Karachi was also badly affected - at least 16 people have been killed after days of flooding. Afghan officials said that emergency teams and supplies were being dispatched to the affected areas, whilst over in Pakistan the army has been called in to help with the clean-up operations. Ghulam Farooq, the head of emergency operations for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority told the AFP news agency that hundred of people have been displaced in eastern areas of Afghanistan and that hundreds of hectares of farmland had been destroyed. In Pakistan, where in some districts many houses have been swept away, disaster response officials have warned that more rain may be on the way over the coming days.
