Egypt: Ex-President Mubarak released from jail

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been released from prison after appealing against his detention. The 85-year old was flown out of Tora prison in Cairo by helicopter on Thursday - and is now expected to be put under house arrest. Egyptian state TV showed pictures of Mr Mubarak being transferred from an ambulance into  a medical helicopter before showing the aircraft leaving the jail as supporters of Mubarak waved flags outside. He was then taken to a military hospital in Cairo. Mr Mubarak still faces charges of corruption and complicity in the killing of demonstrators during protests against him, which eventually saw him overthrown from power, in 2011. He is now under house arrest, with the office of Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi confirming this. Egypt is currently under a state-of-emergency amid violence and hundreds of killings following a crackdown by the countries army-backed Interim government against supporters of deposed-President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood party. Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters were killed by army and government forces when they cleared major protest camps earlier this month, and hundreds of members of the Brotherhood movement - including Mr Morsi, are being detained by the military.
