India: Police say they have arrested a 'top militant' leader

Officials say that police in India have arrested Yasin Bhatkal, the alleged head of the Indian Mujahideen militant group, which has been blamed for a string of recent attacks. Mr Bhatkal, who officials say is a co-founder of the home-grown group, is one of the most wanted men in the country. The group is thought to be behind deadly blasts in the cities of Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. Home Minister Kumar Shinde told reporters of Thursday: "Yasin Bhatkal was arrested last night [Wednesday] in Bihar", adding that he was in custody and being questioned. Reports say that he was detained near the border with Nepal. His real name is believed to be Muhammad Ahmad Zarar Siddibappa, but he uses a number of aliases, the authorities say. The group he is thought to have co-founded, The Indian Mujahideen militant group, was outlawed in 2010 after Indian authorities blamed it for an attack on a German bakery in Pune in which 17 people were killed and 64 people were wounded.
