Italy: six migrants apparently die in shipwreck

The bodies of six migrants who are thought to have been killed in a shipwreck have been recovered off the coast of Southern Italy. Officials say around 100 migrants, reportedly Syrians according to one official at a nearby port, have been rescued. In Saturday's incident, it is thought that a boat carrying 120 migrants - many were women and there were 17 children - ran aground 15m off the shoreline and those onboard were thrown into the sea off the coast of Southern Italy near the port of Catania. The bodies of those who drowned, reportedly because they couldn't swim, were found by employees at a beach resort. In the first half of this year, 7,800 illegal migrants and asylum seekers arrived in Italy, according to the UN.
