Lebanon: Blast in Tripoli kills at least 42 people

At least 42 people have been killed and more than 400 wounded in two bomb attacks in the northern city of Tripoli. Ambulances rushed to the scene of the explosions, by two mosques, and television pictures showed cars on fire and black smoke. A local resident told Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper: "It was as if there was an earthquake, the whole city seemed to be shaking". No group has claimed responsibility for this attack, which came just a week after a car bomb in the capital Beirut claimed the lives of 27 people. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has condemned the attack, and called for calm and restraint. The first bomb detonated by the al-Taqwa mosque shortly after Friday prayers, and minutes later a second explosion struck the al-Salam mosque. In addition to a statement from the UN Secretary-General, the UN Security Council said in a statement that it: "appealed to all Lebanese people to preserve national unity in the face of attempts to undermine the country's stability". Lebanon's outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati and President Michel Suleiman also condemned the attacks.
