Work on the main structure of the world's second tallest skyscraper has been completed, as the final beam was placed on the structure by a crane 1,900ft above the city below. The tower is now the highest in Asia, and globally second only to Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which is 2,723ft tall. The Shanghai tower, which cost an estimated $14.8 billion yuan, will stand at over 2,066ft when it is finished; expected to be in the first half of next year. At a news conference to mark the completion of the work on the main structure, Xia Jun, of US design firm Gensler said: "It's a landmark and it will change the skyline of Shanghai", adding "I don't think the importance of an architecture lies entirely in its height".
