The US secretary of state John Kerry has arrived in Pakistan for talks with the newly-elected government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The talks will focus on the economy and counter-terrorism measures, and Mr Kerry is also expected to discuss US drone strikes against suspected militants in Pakistan; between 2004 and 2013, CIA strikes killed up to 3,460 people in the country. Prime Minister Sharif has demanded an end to the drone strikes, saying they violate his countries sovereignty. Mr Kerry's visit to Pakistan, his first as secretary of state, had not been publicly announced because of security concerns. He is set to meet Mr Sharif, who was elected in May, and out-going President Ali Asif Zardari in the capital Islamabad on Thursday. Observers say Mr Kerry hopes to put a fresh focus on America's relations with Pakistan.
