US: 'Toxic' train derails in Louisiana - 100 homes evacuated

Around 100 homes have been evacuated in the US state of Louisiana after a derailed train carriage began leaking toxic chemicals. The rail car leaked sodium hydroxide, which can be lethal if inhaled, a Union pacific railways spokesperson said. According to state governor Bobby Jindal, air pollution had not been detected and the extent of the damage would be known soon. He added: "Anytime you have chemicals leaking into the environment, thats a serious issue". More than 20 train carriages came off the tracks at 15.30 local time on Sunday. It is not yet known what caused the de-railment. The conductor and engineer of the train were not injured, but one man required medical attention after reporting a burning sensation in his eyes, according to a railway spokeswoman. State police said a road next to the tracks would be closed for at least two days.
