The European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has met Egypt's deposed President Mohammed Morsi, her spokesperson has said. The location of the meeting was not given, but it was revealed that it took place on Monday evening and lasted two hours; in which "in-depth" discussions between the two took place. Mr Morsi has been detained since 3 July after he was overthrown by the military following protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square. He has not been seen in public or in photographs since, and it is un-clear where the army is holding him, and un-known if anyone has been able to visit him. Baroness Ashton's visit to Mr Morsi comes after more than 70 supporters of Morsi were killed in clashes with security forces and the army. The ousted leader's allies have said they are planning a major protest in Cairo on Tuesday; but the interim government, which is mainly controlled by the army, has warned they will crack down and use force against protesters. Ms Ashton also met the head of Egypt's armed forces, General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, and government ministers on Monday.
