Lady Ashton at a news conference after meeting with Mr Morsi. |
Deposed President Mohammed Morsi is "well" and in "good health" according to EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton who met with him on Monday night. Baroness Ashton said she had two-hours of "frank, in-depth" discussions with Mr Morsi, but did not know where he was being held and gave no further details on the conversations she had. She is the first foreign diplomat to meet with Mr Morsi since he was detained after being overthrown by the army in what is seen by his supporters as a military coup on July 3. She said that Mr Morsi had access to news through newspapers and television, and was following developments. At a news conference after she had met with Mr Morsi, she told journalists: "He is there with two advisers. They are there together. It is a military place. The people around him do care for him. I looked at the facilities", adding that: "He had been told about half an hour before I arrived that I was coming. He was, I think, pleased so see me". But Ms Ashton wouldn't go into details of what was said, saying: "I'm not going to put words into his mouth", and simply described the talks as "friendly, open and very frank".
