Japanese government to 'take measures' on Fukushima plant leak

Japan's Prime Minister has pledged government action on the Fukushima plant clean-up after the news that radioactive water may have been leaking into the ocean from the plant for up-to 3 years. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government would take "firm measures" to contain the leak, which a government official said could be up-to 300 tonnes of radioactive water flowing into the open sea every day. Mr Abe added: "This is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed".  One proposal being considered is to freeze the ground around the plant - with reports suggesting this could cost $400million - , which was badly damaged in Japan's 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami. Contaminated water may have been leaking into the sea from the plant ever since the 2011 disaster three years ago, an official at Japan's energy ministry said, adding that the government believed 300 tonnes of radioactive water could be leaking into the sea on a daily basis.
