Syrian government denies rebel claims they attacked President Assad's convoy

Syrian authorities have denied rebel claims that they attacked President Bashar Al Assad's convoy in Damascus. Rebels had claimed that they launched the attack as Mr Assad traveled to attend prayers to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al Fitr - but footage broadcast on State Television showed him apparently looking relaxed and smiling as he arrived at the mosque. However, there is speculation the footage shown was pre-recorded as on the screen a 'live' caption swiftly dissapeared whilst the network showed images of a smiling Assad. Syria's information minister denied the claims, saying they were just "dreams and illusions". One rebel leader, Firas al Bitar' told news agency Reuters his fighters had fired at the convoy, saying from an un-disclosed location,: "The attack rattled the regime, even if Assad was not hit". He added that he was sure they had targeted the right convoy: "There were two motorcades, one containing Assad and a decoy. We targeted the correct one".
