US: Ohio Kidnapper Ariel Castro found hanged in his prison cell

A man who kept three woman and his child captive at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, has been found dead in his cell. Ariel Castro, who is 53 years old, held three women against their will for about a decade until May this year. He kept his victims, chained them up and raped them - fathering the child of one of the women. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 1 August, and the house where he kept Michelle Knight, 32, Amanda Berry, 27, and Gina DeJesus, 23, was demolished. A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said: "He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals", adding: "Upon finding Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to (the prison medical center) where he was pronounced dead at 10.52pm". The spokesperson said "A thorough review of the incident is under way". Mr Castro was not on suicide watch.
