Venezuela: Power cut leaves 70% of the country without power
A power cut has left 70% of Venezuela without electricity, including areas of the capital Caracas. There was travel chaos after the blackout disabled traffic lights in the capital city, and the shortage also partially disrupted the underground transport system. Thousands of workers were sent home early due to the power cut. Power is now slowly being restored in areas following the blackout, and authorities say they will give priority to restoring transport in Caracas. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed the opposition for "sabotage" to power transmission lines, saying on twitter: "Everything seems to indicate that the far-right has resumed its plan for an electrical strike against the country". But critics of Mr Maduro reject the allegations, saying poor management and the failure to invest in infrastructure are to blame.
