Mr Zuma announced the news to the nation at 23.50 local time, saying South Africa had lost its "greatest son". He was 95 years old, and had made his last public appearance at the World Cup, hosted by South Africa, in 2010.
He was the first Black President of the country, and is known across the World for his courage and uniting the country.
He had been known affectionately in South Africa as "Mabida".
