President Barack Obama has led tributes from around the World to Nelson Mandela, who has died aged 95.
Within an hour following the announcement of Mandela's death, made by current South African President Jacob Zuma, Mr Obama spoke - saying "I cannot imagine my own life without the example that Mandela set" adding: "We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. He no longer belongs to us, he belongs to the ages".
Former leaders of countries also paid tribute to Mr Mandela; George HW Bush said he had "changed the course of history" and former Prime Minister Tony Blair called Mandela a "great man" who made racism "not just immoral but stupid. He haled him as a "unique political figure at a unique moment in history".
Gordon Brown also commented on the death, saying Nelson Mandela was "the greatest leader of our generation".
The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, who had been attending the premier of a film about Nelson Mandela's life when the news of his death broke, said: "This is extremely sad news. My thoughts and prayers and with him and his family".
He added: "We are just reminded what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was".
