Leader Profile: Russia's Vladimir Putin
We will return to our usual format of news and breaking news on 22 August 2013, following re-development of the website which means, due to circumstances beyond our control, we cannot operate to our full capacity.
Vladimir Putin is one of the world's most recognizable men. Elected President of Russia in 2012, the largest country in the World, Mr Putin had previously served as President from 2000 - 2008 and as Prime Minister 1999 - 2000 and 2008 - 2012. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born on the 7th October 1952 in the Soviet Russian city of Leningrad (modern day St Petersburg). His mother Maria Ivanovna Putina was a factory worker, and his father - Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin - was a conscript in the Soviet Navy. Vladimir Putin studied law and joined the KGB after graduating from university. He served as a spy in East Germany; an experience which helped him build and maintain good relations with Berlin when he came to power. He served his first term as President from 2000 - 2003, and won a landslide victory in February 2004; serving another four year term. In 2008, Mr Putin's protege Dmitry Medvedev won a landslide victory in the Presidential elections, and Vladimir became Prime Minister. In 2012, Mr Putin announced we would stand for President again, with Dmitry Medvedev as him Prime Minister, and he won the election. Mr Putin was once described by his his wife and mother of two daughters Lyudmila as a workaholic. Vladimir and Lyudmila announced they were divorcing after nearly 30 years of marriage in 2013, with Mrs Putin saying her husband was "completely drowned in work". The black-belt President appears to relish a macho image; posing for topless photos on a horse earlier this year, and in 2000 he flew a fighter plane as part of his election campaign. Mr Putin could by-law stand in the 2018 Presidential elections and serve a fourth term: although he says he has not yet decided whether he will.
